Ice Cream
September/October 2003

What's new in the freezer for summer?

Get ready for a huge ice cream season as the manufacturers begin their summer launches.

With the ice cream season fast approaching, it's time once more to look at what's new in the freezer from each of the manufacturers. It's the new products, new variants and relaunches that drive the impulse ice cream business, so here's a rundown of what's new for the 2003/2004 summer.

Nestle Peters
Having recorded excellent performance for its flagship DRUMSTICK and HEAVEN brand, Nestlé Peters has introduced new flavours for DRUMSTICK and HEAVEN as well as a new identity for SKI as an ice cream. And for the kids there's the new jelly-centred WOBBLE GUTZ.

Following the success of DRUMSTICK Royale Caramel and the recent launch of Boysenberry Swirl, comes a new flavour for summer - DRUMSTICK Peppermint Cream. It's filled with creamy mint ice cream, choc flakes and a creamy peppermint sauce and topped with choc confectionery pieces in a chocolate tipped crispy wafer cone. The product features striking packaging with a transparent lid.

Another new indulgence product, HEAVEN Chocolate Truffle features a centre of smooth chocolate truffle surrounded by creamy vanilla ice cream, smothered in milk chocolate and decorated with a white chocolate drizzle. HEAVEN chocolate Truffle will be supported with a $1.5 million National outdoor campaign - "I'm in Chocolate Truffle Heaven!"

HEAVEN will be available in September with DRUMSTICK Peppermint Cream following in October.

The Refreshment segment has seen the addition of two innovative products. Through a global acquisition, Nestle Peters has been able to leverage the well known SKI brand into the ice cream category - the first ice cream product under this brand being SKI Berry Delicious. Described as a swirl of berry sorbet with real berry pieces and low fat ice cream, SKI Berry Delicious is also 98% fat free. Nestle Peters expects sales to sizzle, given the huge awareness of the SKI brand together with the backing of a $1 million advertising campaign.

Something new and interesting for kids from Nestle Peters is WOBBLE GUTZ: Comprising a raspberry jelly core and covered with a bubblegum water ice shell, it's sure to be a big hit.

WOBBLE GUTZ is available from September; SKI Berry Delicious follows in October.

PB Foods
From PB Foods, the makers of Cadbury Ice Cream, comes another raft of new products to lend interest to the ice cream cabinets this season.

FRUJU SLUSH is an orange, passionfruit and pineapple flavoured ice slushy in a no-mess, squeezable pouch. It's 99.9% Fat Free and made with real fruit juice. The resealable lid is perfect for people on the go!

All in a cup to go, CRUNCHIE NUGGETS are bite sized Crunchie ice cream with honeycomb pieces and covered in Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate.

A thrill for any young mouth, YOWIE BOOF'S Popping Power is a magical swirl of milk ice half dipped in chocolate with popping candy.

DOME LATTE CHOC WEDGE* PB Foods has teamed up with Dome Coffees to produce a creamy latte Choc Wedge ice cream that is smothered in white chocolate and then dusted with chocolate. For a limited time, consumers can take their specially marked Dome Latte Choc Wedge popstick to any Dome Cafe in Western Australia to receive a $1 discount off the recommended retail price of a Dome Café Latte with any cake or food purchase (Conditions apply, call 1800 650 308).
*Product sold in WA only

Weis
There's something scrumptious from Queensland too. Weis Frozen Foods has had a strong sales year, according to Julie Weis, Joint Managing Director of Weis Frozen Foods, with Weis bar volume sales up 12%. She said that much of this growth was driven by the launch of the new RASPBERRIES AND CREAM bar last September.

"Supported by a television advertising campaign which featured a lady buried in Raspberries and tagged with the line "Berry yourself", the launch has been our most successful ever.

"The product has continued to perform well through the winter so we have made it part of our permanent range. This summer will see the continuation of the "Berry Yourself" television campaign in all states except WA and Tasmania."

Streets
The Streets' freezer is bursting with mouth-watering new variants for Magnum and Cornetto (Snacking), and refreshing new fruit flavours for Calippo and Paddle Pop Cyclone (Refreshment).

Additions to Streets' Magnum range include MAGNUM Toffee Tease which comes in a crisp waffle cone, filled with a blend of sticky toffee fudge and butterscotch ice cream, topped with Magnum choc and crunchy honeycomb chunks; MAGNUM Adulterberry - a red waffle cone filled with a blend of marscapone ice cream and raspberry gelato and topped with raspberry coulis and choc curls; MAGNUM Too Choc To Handle - choc lined choc waffle cone, with a blend of mud and vanilla ice creams, topped with magnum choc and crunchy choc biscuit pieces.

The new CORNETTO Strawberry comprises reduced fat vanilla ice cream swirled with luscious strawberry fudge, in a crisp wafer cone, topped with crunchy choc n' peanuts and includes a generous choc plug.

Even more reason to have a GAYTIME - the new Chocolate variant offers marbled chocolate and vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate and coated in crunchy chocolate biscuit pieces.

Following the popularity of PADDLE POP CYCLONE last year, Streets has developed a new variant - a refreshing and colourful tropical icy twist of strawberry, passionfruit and pineapple. Great for kids as Cyclone is made with real fruit juice!

With Cyclone strongly entrenched in the Kids' Refreshment segment, Streets is introducing three new variants of CALIPPO tube, in addition to CALIPPO Lemon - aimed at the teen/young adult market. The three new variants of Orange & Mango, Apple & Blackcurrant and Wild Strawberry are set to re-invigorate the Refreshment segment.
