Mobil celebrates 120 year history: calls for book contributions

To celebrate Mobil Oil Australia’s 120 year anniversary, the company is reaching out to the broader community to find nostalgic moments that will form part of a special commemorative book titled ‘Then, Now and Tomorrow’ – telling the stories behind the brand’s rich Australian history from its origins as Vacuum Oil until today.

In June 1979, well before Mobil fuel pumped through 7-Eleven petrol convenience stores, free groceries were handed out to the public to celebrate the first Mobil ‘4Square Food Mart’ in Melbourne.

This is just one of the thousands of fascinating memories made since Australia’s first oil company opened its door at 9 Queen Street, Melbourne, in February 1895.

Until Monday 17 August, 2015, members of the public are invited to send in and share anecdotes, articles and imagery that can help provide different perspectives on how Mobil’s support of transportation, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, marketing and engineering has helped to fuel a nation.

$100 Fuel cards will be awarded to submissions that make it in to the book.

Mobil’s Australian retail sales manager, Kim MacMillan, said: “We want to celebrate our 120-year journey by involving local communities that have helped us grow, and have been part of the ride for well over a century.

“Submissions could be anything from capturing the colour of a local sponsorship or worthy community project in their township, a historic photo of a family member who worked at one of our refineries, or even the development of a community as its manufacturing capabilities grew.”

The book is being supported and curated by an Engineers Australia National Council member and former Mobil employee John McIntosh. The finished book will be gifted to local libraries and schools for educational use.
