NZ supermarket celebrates 30 years

New Zealand’s PAK’nSAVE this week celebrates its birthday and after 30 years the Kiwi owned supermarket remains committed to its original promise of bringing New Zealander’s the country’s lowest food prices.

The PAK’nSAVE concept is based on supermarket format’s seen in America where the store is designed to resemble a food barn or warehouse that buys product in bulk to get the best prices possible for customers. A simple proposition which has proved to be a huge success with customers from the minute PAK’nSAVE opened its doors in Kaitaia in 1985. In fact PAK’nSAVE was so popular in the Far North the store ended up operating a monthly bus trip to help customers travel specifically to PAK’nSAVE Kaitaia to do their grocery shopping.

Following this initial success, a couple of months later, PAK’nSAVE Henderson opened its doors and within two days of opening had to install two additional checkouts to ease customer congestion, such was its popularity.

Steve Anderson, Managing Director, Foodstuffs New Zealand Ltd, says that PAK’nSAVE is proud to have been saving Kiwis money each week on their groceries. “Since opening our doors in 1985, PAK’nSAVE has never stopped looking for ways to keep costs down for our customers.”

But you don’t have to just take our word on our low prices, Consumer Magazine for several years has agreed that PAK’nSAVE is the cheapest supermarket in the country and also Reader’s Digest magazine has voted PAK’nSAVE the most trusted supermarket in the country for the last three years.

“Every store is 100% locally owned and operated and we pride ourselves on getting right behind all things Kiwi. Over the last 30 years, PAK’nSAVE has made a real commitment to work with local producers and we have helped many Kiwi suppliers achieve their own successes through sales and exposure to customer in our stores.”

What’s next for PAK’nSAVE? Keeping prices low into the future requires a holistic approach to the business, which is why they are committed to creating a sustainable business model for years to come. Building stores that are energy efficient with LED lighting and transcritical refrigeration is part of the process, as is waste minimisation and the ongoing need to reduce the environmental footprint. To this effect they are committed to reducing waste to landfill and stores are continually looking at more efficient packaging and recycling opportunities, all of which help keep prices down for customers.

Over the next few weeks, customers will see PAK’nSAVE’s around the country celebrating the 30th milestone with birthday prices on selected items and plenty of other in-store celebrations and deals. Birthday celebrations start 10 August until 23 August.
