Keeping underground storage tanks in top condition

Tanknology, a globally recognised leader in precision underground storage tank integrity testing, has developed CleanFuel™ – a new and effective way to address fuel system quality problems.

CleanFuel™ offers cleans fuel product down to 5 microns while mininising site disruption.

Contaminants in underground tanks cause frequent maintenance problems including damage to fuel system components and to customer vehicles – neither of which are good for your business. Eliminating contaminants from the system lowers maintenance costs and improves the overall fuel system performance.

Contaminants can enter the underground fuel system at many opportunities – during construction, maintenance activities and/or during fuel delivery – through fill pipes, spill bucket drains, and also develop as a result of issues within the tank such as the growth of microorganisms and/or internal corrosion.

Solving this issue is important to ensuring your tanks remain in peak condition. CleanFuel™  has been developed by Tanknology to provide tank cleaning service that will ensure tanks operate at peak performance with minimal disruption to your business.

Phil Hull, operations and technical support manager at Tanknology, told C&I Week, “Our latest truck is currently under construction in Perth and it will be stationed in Queensland to meet the increased demand for tank testing and cleaning as the state’s ethanol fuel mandate comes into force”.

Additional CleanFuel™  trucks are currently stationed in Western Australia and New South Wales.

With the ability to service tanks up to 75,000 litres, the CleanFuel™  process utilised an intake and return hoses that are positioned in the tank to circulate fuel and facilitate the cleaning process. As the process continues, the hoses are moved to maximise effectiveness, drawing approximately 11,355 litres (3000 gallons) per hour through the filtration system. A clear section of intake hose allows for visual inspection of the amounts and types of contaminants being drawn from the tank with contaminated fuel passing through as many as four separate filters.

Throughout the entire process strict safety protocols are followed, which include (but are not limited to) safety barricades around work areas and quick access spill response kits on hand.

“Where possible, we run CleanFuel™ while the site continues to operate; we often work through the night at 24 hour sites – whenever is least busy and best suits the site,” Mr Hull told C&I Week.

“While post-cleaning tank samples provide proof of the results achieved, our cameras provide the most striking evidence.”

“Our before and after images are very detailed,” Mr Hull said. “Our cameras are very high tech and we move them around as the cleaning progresses, and this visual aid helps maximise the results.”

Attendees at this year’s C&I Expo in Melbourne will be able to see first hand the cameras that make Tanknology’s CleanFuel™  system so effective. With zooms of up to 60 times and housed in a special protective casing, the cameras are used in both the pre, post and cleaning processes, and, Mr Hull says, “can examine in detail a fly on the wall across the room”.
