US C-store sells ticket worth $878M

A winning lottery ticket in the US worth more than $878 million US or $1 billion AUD, was sold by a local convenience store.

The ticket was sold at some point between October 20-23rd at a KC Mart convenience store in Simpsonville, in Greenville, South Carolina.

The ‘Mega Millions’ ticket was purchased by someone who wished to remain anonymous who only recently came forward to collect their prize, following the draw in October.

A statement from the lottery commission said the winner had opted for a one-time payment of the $878 million.

According to the ABC, the KC Mart will receive $50,000 US for selling the ticket, while the state of South Carolina will receive $61million in income taxes from the winner.

It was the second largest lottery jackpot in the US.
