Coca-Cola Amatil to cut plastics use

Coca-Cola Amatil will reduce its plastics use by a further 1,000 tonnes a year with the opening of a new high-tech bottling line in Indonesia which produces lightweight plastic bottles coated with a thin layer of glass for durability.

Group managing director, Alison Watkins, said the company’s new ‘Affordable Single Serve Pack’ (ASSP) line was only the second of its kind for the company, had capacity for 42,000 bottles an hour, and cost USD$24m to install.

“The new line produces high-quality lightweight containers with improved durability compared with regular bottles but with a lower plastic content,” Watkins said.

“The extremely thin glass coating helps deliver the quality that our customers expect, and cuts our plastics use by 1,000 tonnes a year.

“That’s good news for the environment, and another step forward for bottling innovation.”

Watkins, and president director of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia Kadir Gunduz joined the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Director General for Agro-Industry, Abdul Rochim and Regent of Pasuruan, Irsyad Yusuf to officially open the new line last week.
