Coles Local lands in Sydney

Coles has unveiled the first of its Coles Local format supermarkets in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Rose Bay.

The store is an up-market, hyper-local store with features such as self-serve coffee, an orange juice station, a Japanese mochi ice cream parlour and a pick-and-mix bar for dogs.

Coles CEO Steven Cain said it had been designed to appeal to the local market’s tastes and preferences.

The suburbs surrounding Rose Bay, including Rose Bay North, Dover Heights, Vaucluse and Watsons Bay, were found by the ATO last year to have the third highest median income in the state.

And following extensive research of the local community, Coles has tailored its products to include many premium products from 35 speciality Sydney producers. Such as ready to eat pastas from the Pasta Pantry, sourdough from Sonoma, pastries from French bakery Noisette and meat from local butcher Field to Fork.

As well as being twice as likely to choose premium products than the average shopper, Coles’ research also found local consumers valued fresh and healthy mealtime solutions and were typically aged between 25-44-years-old and childless.

Reflecting the health conscious community, the store also stocks one of the state’s largest ranges of plant-based products and an incredible 500 convenience food products.

More than a quarter of the local community identify as Jewish and the store stock 400 kosher products, one of Australia’s largest ranges.

“Customers want us to make their lives easier, and this store offers our customers the convenience of a supermarket with the range of a specialty store,” Mr Cain said.

“This is our first Coles Local supermarket to open in Sydney. The store has been carefully designed with cutting edge sustainability features and local partnerships with neighbourhood bakers, butchers and producers.”
