The Coca-Cola billboard in Sydney’s Kings Cross is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a makeover and a call for stories from those whose lives it has touched.
Since its installation in 1974, the illuminated sign has served as a beacon for locals and visitors alike, and to mark this significant milestone, Coca-Cola Australia has invited the public to share their personal “Meet me at the Coke sign” moments.
Kate Miller, Marketing Director at Coca-Cola Australia, reflected on the billboard’s rich history.
“We’re so proud to celebrate five decades of incredible history of our iconic Kings Cross billboard. From first dates to epic nights out, it has truly become the cornerstone of many incredible stories of meaningful connection.
“Coca-Cola extends its gratitude to the people of Kings Cross and the city of Sydney for embracing the sign as a symbol of community and celebration. Here’s to 50 more years of bright memories, and may the sign continue to be an iconic meeting point in Sydney.”
To celebrate the anniversary, a QR code has been placed on the newly updated billboard, allowing passers-by to share their stories directly. Those not in the area can also contribute via Coca-Cola’s website.
Over its five decades, the Kings Cross Coca-Cola billboard has become synonymous with Sydney’s vibrant culture. It has lit up events like Mardi Gras, championed marriage equality, supported the Matildas in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and raised over $100,000 for local initiatives.
The sign has also been a familiar backdrop for Sydney’s annual City2Surf, standing as a testament to Coca-Cola’s enduring commitment to the community and its contributions to arts, culture, and shared experiences.
