Coles has opened its first Coles Local supermarket in South Australia, unveiling the new format at The Avenues Shopping Centre in Stepney on 2 October.
Located three kilometres from Adelaide’s CBD, the store is the 31st Coles Local nationally and the first in the state, featuring more than 700 South Australian products from over 60 local food and beverage producers.
Leah Weckert, CEO of Coles, said the new store highlights the state’s strong appetite for local goods.
“We know how important local and family-owned suppliers are to South Australian customers. The Coles Local format allows us to showcase some of the very best products, introduce them to new customers, and still deliver the same great value you’d find in any Coles supermarket.”
Peter Malinauskas, South Australian Premier, welcomed the launch, describing it as a significant investment in local producers.
“It is excellent to see a national retailer recognise the keenness from their customers to get behind South Australian brands – both iconic and emerging, while acting as a launch pad for our food producers to connect with new customers nationally.”
Among the ten new South Australian suppliers joining Coles are Bowlsome, Harris Smokehouse, Skala Bakery and Beyond India. Established local brands such as Beerenberg, Bickfords and Maggie Beer have also expanded their ranges for the store.
Adam Harris, Owner of Harris Smokehouse, said the launch provided a platform to reach more customers.
“There’s something pretty special about seeing our smoked salmon sitting on shelf in a national supermarket that’s gone out of its way to back local, ethical producers.”
The store features a mural by Adelaide artist Lucinda Penn, inspired by local community conversations and scenes. It will also partner with food rescue organisation SecondBite and support the Magill Little Athletics Club.
Coles Local The Avenues is open Monday to Friday from 6am to 9pm, Saturday from 6am to 5pm, and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.
