EzyMart founder elected President of Oceania Taekwondo Union

Maher Magableh, Founder and CEO of EzyMart, has been elected President of the Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU), winning by a vote of 11 to 3.

A lifelong Taekwondo practitioner, Magableh has been involved in the sport since the age of six, serving as an athlete, coach and World Taekwondo council member. His appointment marks a new chapter for the organisation, the governing body representing 19 countries across the region, one he says will focus on inclusivity and long-term growth.

“For the first time, smaller nations have an equal voice, and a new generation of leaders is stepping forward,” said Magableh. “I feel a great responsibility and optimism. I’m honoured by the trust placed in me, and I don’t see this just as a challenge, but as an opportunity to forge a great future for our organisation.”

While his new role at the OTU is voluntary, Magableh balances it with his responsibilities as the founder and CEO of EzyMart, one of Australia’s largest convenience store networks. Since establishing the brand in 2001, he has grown it to more than 490 locations nationwide, driven by a focus on innovation, self-reliance and community impact.

“The discipline, confidence and commitment I developed through Taekwondo continue to guide my business and leadership decisions today. Taekwondo is about using the principles I learned as a child to build a stronger future for the next generation.”

He credits his experience in sport for strengthening his decision-making in business. From managing challenges to staying resilient during uncertain times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The commitment I learned from Taekwondo helped me through tough moments in business. That mindset of perseverance and focus on long-term goals made a big difference.”

Under his leadership, EzyMart has diversified through strategic decisions such as importing products directly from overseas suppliers, developing private-label products, targeting prime retail locations and upskilling team members. These initiatives, he said, have helped the brand remain competitive in an evolving retail environment.

As President of the Oceania Taekwondo Union, Magableh aims to empower emerging leaders and strengthen the sport’s development across all member nations.

“For me, it’s about ensuring Taekwondo continues to inspire people — not just as a sport, but as a way to build discipline, confidence and community,” he said.
