The federal government has allocated $2.4 million to expand Australia’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network, with 250 new kerbside chargers to be installed across New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.
The funding, announced by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), will support EVX Australia in delivering 500 new charge points in both metropolitan and regional areas.
Julie Delvecchio, Chief Executive of the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), said it was exciting to see the federal government allocate additional funding to expand essential EV infrastructure.
“Australia continues to make progress on expanding the EV public charging network. In the past year alone, the number of charging locations and points has doubled to more than 1,800 public fast chargers across more than 1,000 locations nationwide.”
Public charging stations are seen as a key component in encouraging EV adoption by reducing range anxiety and providing more options for drivers without home charging access.
“While most EV drivers primarily charge at home, public chargers remain essential, especially for those long road trips, to provide confidence to travel further and stay longer at destinations,” Delvecchio said. “We also know that it’s tougher for many Australians to own an EV because, for example, they might live in an apartment where it’s difficult to use a charger at home.”
Australia’s EV charging network has expanded significantly in the past year, with the number of public fast chargers doubling to more than 1,800 across 1,000 locations nationwide.
“Electric vehicles are already clocking up tens of thousands of kilometres across Australia,” Delvecchio said. “When more EV drivers can comfortably charge up through an easily available and widespread charging network, range anxiety becomes a concern of the past.”
