SmartFacts

New SmartFacts QR codes give shoppers instant product details

A new digital labelling system, SmartFacts, will begin rolling out on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in Australia from the second half of 2025.

SmartFacts will enable consumers to scan a QR code with their smartphone to access product information such as nutritional content, allergens, and company details.

The initiative is a joint effort by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC), the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council (NZFGC), and barcode standards organisations GS1 Australia and GS1 New Zealand.

Colm Maguire, CEO of AFGC, said this is an innovative and practical leap forward.

“Not just for manufacturers who can now share rich, accurate information in real time – but for consumers who want fast facts at their fingertips. SmartFacts is a 21st century answer to 21st century consumer expectations.”

The system is designed to improve transparency and streamline how product details are shared with consumers and regulators.

Maria Palazzolo, CEO of GS1 Australia, said in a time where transparency is key, SmartFacts is set to redefine how Australians interact with food and grocery products.

“SmartFacts powered by GS1 barcode technology will transform purchasing decisions for shoppers and help them make informed choices with a simple smartphone scan.”

The technology aims to standardise how information is displayed across brands, helping consumers make clearer and more confident choices while also supporting regulatory compliance.
