NSW to roll out 246 new EV chargers in $41.2 million expansion

The NSW Government has announced the installation of 246 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers, backed by $16.1 million in state funding and $25.1 million from private partners.

The chargers, which will be installed across 38 suburbs, will be powered by renewable energy and aim to cut charging times, with the fastest units able to charge EV batteries from 10 to 80 per cent in just 10–15 minutes.

Energy Minister Penny Sharpe said the move addresses one of the main concerns for drivers.

“Making charging faster and eliminating range anxiety are key to getting more EVs on the road in NSW.

“These charging stations will make it easier to charge EVs away from home, while also helping to reduce climate pollution.”

The chargers will feature accessibility options for people with disability and pull-through bays to cater to vehicles towing caravans, trailers and boats.

Five companies – BP, EnergyAustralia, Plus ES, Tesla and NRMA – will deliver the infrastructure across the selected suburbs, which include Dubbo, Mascot, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Tuggerah.

Maryanne Stuart, Member for Heathcote, welcomed the local rollout.

“I’m thrilled to see the Minns Labor Government investment in construction of a well-connected charging network across NSW.

“We are already seeing the benefits of NSW Government investment here in Heathcote where today I have cut a ribbon to celebrate BP’s newest EV charging station, making it easier for EV drivers to hit the road quickly.”

A free community event will be held at Engadine Town Square on Saturday 24 May to provide EV information, workshops and family activities.
