Patties Food Group has finalised its acquisition of National Pies, also known as Tasmanian Bakeries, a Hobart-based, third-generation savoury food business.
The company, founded in 1942 by Alfred Gough, has been renowned for its handcrafted pastries, particularly its unique rectangular ‘National Pies’.
National Pies will continue to operate as a stand-alone business within Patties Food Group. The existing management team and staff will remain in their roles, and operations will stay in Tasmania, with Patties signing a long-term lease for the Hobart site.
Patties Food Group expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating that they look forward to investing in the National Pies brand and markets to continue the business’s incredible growth.
National Pies has been a staple in Tasmania since its inception, becoming available in almost every corner store, school canteen, sporting club, and service station by the 1980s. In 2021, the company expanded its reach to the mainland, and today, National Pies are enjoyed by pie lovers in every capital city across Australia, available at major retailers including Woolworths and Coles.
Despite changes over the years, National Pies continues to bake its products daily in Hobart, using Australian ingredients such as 100 per cent Australian beef, 100 per cent Tasmanian chicken, and fresh country vegetables, all wrapped in 128 layers of house-made puff pastry.
