Self-service fuel station proposed for Upper Burnie

The Burnie City Council has received a proposal to build a 24-hour self-service fuel station at 189–193 Mount Street, Upper Burnie.

The development, spearheaded by Prime Design, aims to consolidate several properties into one to house the new station, which will operate without on-site staff.

“The proposed fuel station is designed to enhance convenience for the local community by providing round-the-clock access to fuel,” said Drew den Hartog, the applicant representing Prime Design. He added that the station’s location near Woolworths and BWS would complement the area’s shopping amenities.

However, nearby residents have expressed concern on potential noise, light pollution, and increased traffic in the predominantly residential area. The Council has confirmed that the station will include measures to address these concerns, such as a 2.1-metre boundary fence and LED lighting designed to minimise spill. Additionally, the developer’s noise and light assessment concluded that the impact on neighbouring properties would remain within acceptable limits.

Traffic impact reports indicate that the fuel station could generate up to 1,000 vehicle movements daily, but the majority are expected to be “pass-by trips” from existing traffic on Mount Street. The Council’s Planning Department has assured that access to the station will be designed to prioritise safety and efficiency.

Community members have until 11 February 2025 to provide written feedback on the application. All submissions will be considered before the Council reaches a final decision.
