WA completes one of the world’s longest EV-charging highways

Western Australia has completed its state-wide electric vehicle (EV) charging network, establishing one of the world’s longest EV-charging highways.

The WA EV Network now includes 110 charging points across 49 locations, spanning from Mundrabilla in the south to Kununurra in the north.

The network, delivered by Synergy and Horizon Power, aims to improve accessibility for EV drivers and support regional tourism. Some chargers in remote areas are powered by standalone systems using solar energy and battery storage.

The project is part of the WA Government’s $43.5 million investment in EV infrastructure. Premier Roger Cook said the initiative would help reduce barriers to EV ownership.

“We want every Western Australian to get out and enjoy our State – including EV drivers. This investment will help to bring down the barriers to EV uptake and help to get more EVs on the road across WA.”

The network’s completion follows a sharp rise in EV ownership in WA. Department of Transport data shows that registered EVs more than doubled in the past financial year to over 22,000, with growth particularly strong in outer-suburban areas such as Wanneroo, Joondalup, and Cockburn.

Many new EV owners have accessed the WA Government’s $3,500 Zero Emissions Vehicle rebate, with 9,200 rebates totalling $32.2 million paid as of December 2024. Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport David Michael noted the additional $5.2 million boost to the scheme announced in May.

Reece Whitby, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Action, said the EV network would benefit both residents and visitors.

“Through our investment in the WA EV Network, we have opened our State to EV drivers, who can travel from Albany to Kalbarri or Perth to Esperance without the fear of range anxiety,” Whitby said. “That’s good news for tourism in WA and a big reason why the network has drawn international attention.”

The network has already gained global recognition, with Time Magazine listing it among the world’s 100 greatest places to visit in 2024.
