BioPak introduces price cuts to compostable straws

Australia’s leading eco-friendly, sustainable packaging company BioPak has introduced massive price cuts on its range of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified paper straws in a move designed to encourage more food and drink outlets to quit serving plastic straws.

Only 9% of the world’s plastic is being reused and recycled, with plastic consumption running rampant and polluting the planet at a scale that has never been seen before.

An estimated 10 million straws are used in Australia every day, and as a soft plastic they can take up to 200 years to break down—that’s if they’re lucky enough to make it into landfill. Many, however, end up in our natural environment causing harm to wildlife.

BioStraws offer a more sustainable alternative to conventional plastic straws (and paper straws lined with conventional plastic). They’re the only straws in Australia made from FSC® certified paper, plus BioStraws are carbon neutral, recyclable and compostable.

If the 10 million straws used daily were replaced with compostable BioStraws, that would remove the need for 12 tonnes of plastic each day, which is equal to 11,760 litres of crude oil. Plus, it reduces carbon emissions by over 8,000kg.

The new pricing will see Regular (6mm) BioStraws prices drop by 38% and Jumbo (10mm) BioStraws prices reduced by 51%. The pricing change comes into effect as of 29 January 2019.

“Whilst paper straws are significantly better than plastic, it’s important to know not all paper straws are created equal. BioPak has the only FSC certified straws in Australia and New Zealand. FSC Chain of Custody certification guarantees that the paper used to produce our straws come from a forest and supply chain that is managed responsibly throughout”, says sustainability director Richard Fine.

BioPak has achieved FSC® certification for its range of paper straws. This confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves the natural ecosystem and benefits the lives of local people and workers, all while ensuring it remains economically viable.

Major brands are starting to adopt eco-friendly paper straws, with Coca-Cola Amatil recently announcing its making the switch to FSC® certified BioStraws, in what is a growing trend to reduce single-use plastic.
